Tensions ran high Monday afternoon outside Denver's Pepsi Center, home of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, as die hard supporters for former Democratic presidential candidate, Hilary Clinton, waged a verbal protest and issued a stark ultimatum to the Barack Obama campaign: Concede or there will be consequences.
"We're not through with this thing yet - not by a long shot," said Nancy Pinkerton, a local coordinator for the Clinton '08 campaign during the New York Senator's ultimately unsuccessful primary run. Pinkerton, a voluble woman in her mid-forties, had plenty of like-minded company on Monday.
"If you count the votes," said Tanya Scobee of Boulder, "you'll plainly see that our girl, Hillary, only lost by a few thousand. A few thousand! They call that a victory? And how can the delegates not even factor in how fabulous she is? Where's the justice?"
Pinkerton agreed. "The fact of the matter is, Barack Obama barely won the primary and yet somehow he'll be the one addressing the entire party on Thursday night. Clearly, the democratic process in this country is broken."
Although Clinton officially conceded after a hard-fought - and at times contentious - primary in June, she has nonetheless come under criticism by some Obama supporters for failing to offer a verbal olive branch to the Illinois Senator. And her backers have been even more obstinate, threatening en masse to reject Obama at the polls by utilizing a new brand of political hard ball.
"It begins here," warned Pinkerton. "We're putting together a grass roots campaign for Hillary supporters to write-in the person they most despise - other than Obama, of course - on their presidential ballots in November. My assumption is that most voters will choose Hitler; I'll be writing-in my ex-husband, Carl, the whore-mongering son of a bitch."
Pinkerton then concluded, "At this stage, our position is 'anyone but Obama,' even if it yields this country eight more years of yet another clueless, unethical president who ends up driving the U.S. even deeper into the economic and moral abyss."
The plan seemed to be gaining traction in the parking lot outside the storied Denver football stadium. By mid-afternoon, many in the pro-Hillary crowd had already fashioned signs that read like a who's who of the most despised individuals in the history of modern civilization: "Hitler for President," " "Pol Pot With Pride!" "Moms for Mengele," and "Katie Holmes '08."
Neither Obama nor Clinton could be reached for comment Monday.
